04/20/2011 Tysen Update

During our short stay at Ohio State University Medical Center following Tysen's birth, he failed a routine hearing screening done on all newborns. It is fairly common for newborns to fail the screening (especially for vaginal deliveries) due to fluid and gunk that gets packed in their little ear canals. The audiologist recommended that we have his hearing rechecked in a few months. In March, I took Tysen to Nationwide Children's Hospital for a hearing test. Because Tysen wouldn't cooperate for long (infants must be asleep for the test), we weren't able to complete the test. I took Tysen back on Tuesday to try again. Unfortunately, we didn't get the results that we'd been praying for. For unknown reasons, Tysen has mild hearing loss in his left ear. We now have an appointment with an ENT (ear, nose, throat specialist) on Friday to hopefully find a reason for the hearing loss. The best case scenario would be that he just has fluid behind the ear drum. If that is the case, he would probably require a minor surgery to place drainage tubes. That's not so scary to us because we've experienced that with Gavin when he was 13 months old. Another possible reason for the hearing loss could be nerve damage. If that is the case, we will discuss having Tysen fitted for hearing aides. Whatever the cause of his hearing loss, I just want to take action quickly. I really regret waiting so long with Gavin when he was having all those ear infections. I really feel that Gavin's speech delay is directly related to all of his ear issues.
Tysen had his 4 month wellness check-up this afternoon. I took the picture of him above once we got home. He was exhausted from the 4 shots he got. Here are his 4 month stats:
Weight: 15 lbs 2 oz (75%)
Height: 26 in (90%)
