5/25/2009 Memorial Day

Since both Mommy and Daddy had the day off work, we decided to go to the mall and have a family picture taken. We told Alexa that if she was good, she could play at the play area. Well, she didn't cooperate for pictures at all. She was very fussy and kept trying to run out of the room. She also wouldn't keep her fingers out of her mouth. To all of our family members reading this right now, I am sorry that we were unable to get a good photograph of Alexa. Gavin was all smiles, as usual. Maybe next time. When the pictures do arrive, you'll probably get a good laugh. Maybe by then I will giggle, too. Today it just stressed me out. It's a lot of work trying to get everyone looking nice, clothes ironed, hair combed, no spit up, drool, or boogies....

We let her play anyways.

It was a very warm day so I decided to let Alexa play in the water. Her aunt Kara gave her a Dora the Explorer sprinkler for Christmas and she had a blast running through the water.

Alexa has learned how to ring our doorbell. I guess this means she's ready to go inside.

Weekend in St. Louis, MO

The Gateway Arch

We traveled to St. Louis, Missouri this weekend for a wedding. It was our first long road trip with both Alexa and Gavin. People at the wedding said we were brave and were impressed that we would attempt a six hour trip with two little ones, but they don't know how lucky we are! Alexa and Gavin are the best kids ever and they made it so easy on us! There will definitely be more road trips in our future.

Alexa is eating goldfish crackers on our bed. We stayed at the Marriott in the historic Union Station.

Gavin sleeping comfortably in our travel crib.

We just had a quick breakfast and decided to go to the St. Louis zoo before the wedding on Saturday.

Alexa loved looking at the fish! I didn't think that we were going to be able to pull her away!

Alexa is braver than I am! I couldn't stand to even look at this statue and Alexa ran right up and tried to steal the snake's eggs!

Alexa didn't quite know what to think about the elephants. She just stared at them with a scowl on her face.

Surprisingly, Gavin seemed to love watching the fish, too! He was following the fish with his huge eyes.

Alexa was excited to see the monkeys. We asked her, "What do monkeys say?" and she replied, "Ooh Ooh Ooh!"

She's got a good view from up on Daddy's shoulders.

Alexa kept quacking at the peacock....not sure why.

It was a long day for the kids. I was surprised that they lasted as long as they did.

Time to dance! Alexa had a blast. She was even trying to drag Daddy out on the dance floor by taking hold of his finger and pulling in that direction.

Calling all single ladies out on the dance floor for the bouquet toss! Alexa participated, but we made sure that she didn't catch it!
This was Alexa and Gavin's first wedding.

Headed back to Ohio now. Alexa is entertaining herself with Mommy's sunglasses.

Gavin is exploring a new toy elephant's trunk.

Once we got home, we stretched out and played with the kids. Gavin threw up on Daddy. He looks like he feels better now!

Mommy's dance partner was falling asleep! He's so cute!

Alexa loves dancing!

Cooling off at the zoo.

Everyone was watching the fish!

Alexa's not quite what to think about the big elephants.

He's so happy!

5/19/2009

Things are very busy at the Briggs house. With two little ones, I don't feel like things ever slow down, not even once they go to bed at night because there is so much to clean up and get ready for the next day. Sometimes I feel like all I do is change diapers! I also feel like I spend a great deal of time at the pediatricians office (not that our kids are sick often, but just all the scheduled baby wellness visits). I was there yesterday with Gavin for his 4 month check-up. He did really well. The doctor commented that he's a perfectly average 4 month old as far as size goes, but developmentally, he's very advanced. He was impressed that Gavin is rolling from back-to-front and then to back again. His head/neck control is great and he's cooing and giggling just like he should be. During his examination, the doctor found some fluid in his ear and decided to treat him with Amoxicillin. Gavin is not a big fan. He also got 5 vaccinations. Alexa was seen last week for her 18 month check-up. I was very proud of her because she didn't even cry when she got 2 shots in her thighs. I talked with her doctor about her biting issue. We've been concerned and frustrated recently because she has been biting other children at daycare on a daily basis. He assured me that this is very common behavior for a child her age. All we can do is be firm, consistent, and redirect her if we feel she is getting ready to bite. Alexa was screened for autism and she passed with flying colors. The biggest lesson that I have learned about doctor visits is "Never schedule back-to-back appointments for both kids trying to save time!" I learned the hard way when I took them both in for Alexa's 15 month and Gavin's 1 month. I remember that Alexa's appointment was first and so I had taken off her clothes so that she could be weighed. Well, Gavin was crying because he was hungry so I was trying to quickly breastfeed him in the room before the doctor came in. Then a nurse opened the door and Alexa saw the perfect opportunity to escape and she started running naked down the hall, laughing the whole way. She even managed to run inside someone's office before I could cover up and catch up with her. I was feeling frazzled and hoping that everyone who witnessed that episode didn't think I was a horrible mother who couldn't control her children.
Alexa's 18 month stats:
weight=27 lbs 5 oz (90%ile) height=32 inches (90%ile) head circumference=49.8 cm (97%ile)

Gavin's 4 month stats:
weight=14 lbs 5oz (50%ile) height=24.75 inches (50%ile) head circumference = 43 cm (95%ile)
