This evening we went to our favorite bike store, Roll. Matthew and I decided to get Alexa her first bike for her 2nd birthday. We had originally thought that we'd get her a tricycle, but after doing some research and talking to some people, we decided on a run bike (also known as a balance bike). Run bikes help teach balance and coordination to children as young as 2 years old. All the child needs to do is sit and push off with their feet. It makes transitioning to a pedal bike simpler. Bicycles with training wheels can give a child a false confidence when the training wheels come off. Teaching your child to ride a bike with a pedal free run bike introduces balance, steering, and speed control before they push the pedals of their first two-wheeler. Alexa was very excited and yelled, "My Bicycle!"to all the customers in the store. She is just a tad short for the bike because she uses her tip toes to touch the floor. All she needs is another 1/2 inch of height and it will be perfect. The seat can adjust so that it can grow with her up until age 6 (but we hope that she'll be riding a pedal bike before then!).
