This evening we went to our favorite bike store, Roll. Matthew and I decided to get Alexa her first bike for her 2nd birthday. We had originally thought that we'd get her a tricycle, but after doing some research and talking to some people, we decided on a run bike (also known as a balance bike). Run bikes help teach balance and coordination to children as young as 2 years old. All the child needs to do is sit and push off with their feet. It makes transitioning to a pedal bike simpler. Bicycles with training wheels can give a child a false confidence when the training wheels come off. Teaching your child to ride a bike with a pedal free run bike introduces balance, steering, and speed control before they push the pedals of their first two-wheeler. Alexa was very excited and yelled, "My Bicycle!"to all the customers in the store. She is just a tad short for the bike because she uses her tip toes to touch the floor. All she needs is another 1/2 inch of height and it will be perfect. The seat can adjust so that it can grow with her up until age 6 (but we hope that she'll be riding a pedal bike before then!).
There were 3 different seat color choices: blue, green, and orange. The salesman lined them all up for Alexa and we let her choose which one she wanted. She picked orange. Then she looked at me, smiled, and said, "Like a pumpkin!" She is so smart! After picking her bike out, the salesman went to air up the tires and she get very upset when he took it from her. So instead of taking the bike into their backroom, he brought the air pump out front so that Alexa could watch.
