7/04/2009

We had a very exciting holiday weekend. We took a road trip to Peoria, IL to meet my parents and stay in a hotel. Peoria just happens to be halfway between Emerson, IA and Columbus, OH (approx. 400 miles each). When they arrived at the hotel, I was shocked to see my little sister, Kara, jump out of the truck! The stowaway wanted to surprise us! I was so excited to see her. We enjoyed our stay at the hotel. They had a nice pool that we had all to ourselves (not too many people travel to Peoria on holiday weekends). Alexa had a blast in the water, as usual, and Gavin even seemed to enjoy it. Mostly he just liked watching Alexa kick her legs and splash. It was great to see my parents, but I especially liked watching Alexa and Gavin interact with them. I feel so much guilt knowing that my kids are growing up not knowing the rest of our families, but Alexa and Gavin warmed up to them right away and you'd never know that they don't seem them very often.

After the pool, Alexa, Gavin, and Aunt Kara were exhausted. They were napping when the fire alarms went off. My mom and I thought it must be a drill, but when we opened our door to check it out, smoke was rolling out into the hallway from a room about 4 doors down. As everyone was evacuating the hotel, a brave housekeeper grabbed a fire extinguisher and rushed into the flaming room. Her quick thinking probably saved the hotel a lot of damage. We heard rumors that it was a grease fire. They ended up taking two people to the hospital, the housekeeper suffered a hand laceration as she broke the glass door to get the fire extinguisher and the girl who started the fire had second degree burns on her hands.

Alexa liked seeing all the commotion. Once everything was under control, I walked her up to the fire engine so that she could get a closer look.

Here we are waiting outside while the fire fighters make sure that it's safe to return to our rooms.

More pool time!

Alexa really took a liking to Grandma.

Happy 4th of July!
